Change of the Name of the Committee for LGBTQI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender[ed], Questioning, and Intersex[ed]) Concerns

Date of Notice:
Sat, 04/25/2015
Legislation, Resolution, or Policy Adoption:
Current Status:
Approved on 06/03/15

Section I

1.1 WHEREAS, the University of Oregon’s mission statement prioritizes inclusivity; and

1.2 WHEREAS, the University of Oregon’s policy prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression; and

1.3 WHEREAS, the terms “transgender” and “intersex” should not have an –ed as an ending. The –ed suffix can cause (past/present) tense confusion and grammatical errors; and

1.4 WHEREAS, many transgender people agree that the term “transgendered” implies that something happened to them. This denies a transgender person the dignity of being born with their identity; and

1.5 WHEREAS, the phrase “a person who has transgendered” is also incorrect and offensive in its connotations: a person does not transgender, they transition. However, the phrase also assumes that all transgender people transition from one gender to another, or that being transgender is something occurring in the past; and

1.6 WHEREAS, the phrase “a person who is/has intersexed” is also incorrect and can cause (past/present) tense confusion and grammatical errors: a person does not intersex, they are intersex or have an intersex variation or condition;

1.7 WHEREAS, best practices indicate that a person’s identity does not include an –ed suffix. For example, we do not say that a person is gayed, lesbianed, or straighted; and

1.8 WHEREAS, we know from (dis)ability studies and theory that people-first language is preferred, emphasizing the person first and the trait as a secondary characteristic; and

1.9 WHEREAS, the name of the Standing Committee "for LGBT Concerns (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender)” was changed last year to the "Standing Committee for LGBTQI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender(ed), Questioning, and Intersex(ed) Concerns"; and

Section II

2.1 BE IT THEREFORE MOVED, that the University of Oregon shall change the name of the “Committee for LGBTQI: (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender(ed), Questioning, and Intersex(ed) Concerns” to the “University Committee on Sexual Orientation, Attraction, Gender Identity and Expression;” and

2.2 BE IT FURTHER MOVED that the Senate will change the name of the committee on its website, in other relevant places and in pertinent materials.
